Pressure Cooker

Was traveling through the hills in West Virginia and this is what I came across beside the gas station where I stopped. I ask the old timer sitting beside the pressure cooker why he had a brick on top of it thinking that I would learn something from the old timer. WRONG !
He was sitting there canning green beans and he could not find the weight for on the top of the pressure cooker so he put a nail in the hole and sit the brick on top to keep the nail from blowing out under pressure. You can see the cooker has 10 lbs pressure on it. I ask if he was afraid of it blowing up and he said "it ain't happened fur about 12 years ur so now".
  • The old guy probably searched for years, finding the right sized nail for the cooker, one that let a little steam out but didn't let all the pressure escape. The OP could have asked about nail size and then he would have learned something.
  • We learn early in life on a Red Neck farm to make do with what you have,at least once anyway, more if it works the first time.:)
  • I think I would have said "good for you" and then have backed away from it fairly quickly. Not quickly enough to raise suspicion but, just fast enough to get out of there before the luck runs out.

I am not very lucky. My luck would have it blowing up just about the time I noticed it. lol
  • Bless his Heart!!! Just another incident of good old American native ingenuity and making do. Just hope that Darwin in on his side.
