I visited the NYC area last Fall and recommend staying on Long Island instead of NJ. Battle Row has a surprising rural feel and was clean and safe. (Also much less expensive). You can drive to the LIRR and take the train into the City.

Battlerow is county run and has a dump station. Is located near nice smaller towns for shopping and dining and near LIRR stations. Be sure to visit Jones Beach if you do decide to stay on the Island. You can get into the park free during the week (no camping overnight and no dogs).
You have to watch your routes (clearance). LI Expressway is safe and the campground is less than a mile from one of the exits.
