CELL PHONE COVERAGE ?

My family has had T Mobile for many years. Last year I had hit and miss cell coverage where I use to have it. This happened in a few of our favorite camp grounds. T Mobile rep told me, after givin me a new SIM card, my phone must be too old. So got a new Apple 5s. Went camping same spot had service once then not again for the entire weekend. I was pondering this and wonder if my cell phone case limits signal? Wife and I both have covers neither got service. Should have took it off to try. Did'nt think of it until now. What say you?

My working years required me to be in many 'WAY OFF' the normal grid areas all over the US. The only carrier that could work for us was always VERIZON.

I'm sure some of the other carriers are doing better now but over the years for the best dependable coverage we could always depend on the VERIZON NETWORK to keep us connected.

The problem is VERIZON knows this and charges appropriately hehe...

  • T-Mobile is really an "urban" service (and I have T-Mobile). Service where camgrounds are can be, iffy.
I get solid coverage "in town", rural, well....
Ocean Shores, fine, Ocean City (5 miles north), iffy. Pacific Beach, NADA.
Friends with Verizon have coverage all the way up the coast to PacBeach
  • Could be the phone, but could be some change in their local coverage that caused the problem since you did have it at one time but no longer.

We had AT&T several years ago. We made an annual trip to south central Colorado every year. We got very weak service at the campground (about 5 miles from town) but great signal in town. But others with AT&T got reasonable service at the campground. Upon returning home we went to an AT&T store, explained the problem, and they suggested new phones (surprise, surprise), and recommended specific models. Well the next time we went to the same campground, not only could we not get signal at the campground, we could not get it in town either. Called AT&T and explained the problem. Their first reply was that they do not provide service to that area. When I explained that I had got service there previously (as noted by ATT on the phone screen), they could not explain it. I asked for different model phones to replace the new ones that did not work where our old ones did. Then their basic reply was, sorry, you were the ones who decided to buy new phones. But they would be glad to sell us different new ones.

Went to Verizon and never regretted it. Much better coverage at that campground and every where else we have ever been.
  • I have never heard of a cell phone case blocking signal. IPhones have never been known for strong signal. Motorola devices are usually good for use in a low signal environment. T-Mobile in the Pacific Northwest is typically sub par. Ask other campers what they are using. Also consider a cell phone booster.
  • We almost went At&T. Probley should have. Camped with a friend who has AT&T and an apple Iphone. He never lost service. O well
  • We have had ATT and Verizon.
While camping, our Verizon gets lots better service than ATT at the same locations.
  • Your phone case is most likely plastic. Plastic will not interfere or block radio frequency waves (cell phone signal). Most likely there is a problem with the cell tower in that area or your cell phone provider no longer has access to that tower.
  • Last month we were in a place with borderline coverage. DW's Iphone got no service not even 1X but my android phone got at least 1X and usually 3G. I think the problem is your phone.
