Not an answer but are you sure you want to take two children that age to see a monument and some molten rock? for three weeks?
I was 8 when our family took a three week trip "out west". While "the monument" was ok, the "molten rock" stayed sigh me the rest of my life. Best trip ever.
I have to agree with you. In 2007 we took our two youngest out West for the grand tour. DD was 14 & DS was 12. DS also is severely mentally handicapped and autistic, like a 1 year old who walks but needs full assistance and supervision at all times.
Anyway, we went to Carlsbad Cavern, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Mt. Rushmore, Devil's Tower and much, much more. We had a lot of people question taking our son out there--in fact, one idiot even said, "Why would you carry a kid like THAT to a place like THIS?" Thankfully, my DH didn't hear it or there might have been a throwdown right there on the boardwalk!
There's no real telling how much of the trip DS understood, of course, but that didn't stop him from having a great time. We never know what experience is going to unlock some hidden door for him. Even now, 8 years later, DS will stop and stare at the TV if there is a show about Yellowstone on. In fact, he'll walk up to the TV and put his hand on the animals.
OP, this is my long way of saying "Go for it~!" There will be some things that your kids will find boring but there will be a lot of things your kids will love, especially if you intersperse "learning activities" with swimming, rock collecting, ice cream, and kickball here and there.
