RV park near the USAFA

My nephew just reported to the USAFA last week (Go Air Force!), so we are looking for places to camp near there. Since I carry, all military CG's are off-limits to me, as far as I can tell. Not looking for a "resort", just a decent, clean CG, with full hook ups. TIA...

Congrats to your nephew! It is my understanding that your nephew can sponsor you so you can stay at military campgrounds. Peregrine Pines Campground is the closest to the Academy. I would call them to verify that he will be able to sponsor you. (719) 333-4980 (Weekdays, May - Nov)

Congrats to your nephew! When my son was attending the Academy he would always sponsor us for staying at Peregrine Pines Campground. In fact by the time he was a senior (1st classman) the campground manager knew us by name and always had our special site available. we sure miss that time! Thanks for your nephew's commitment to our safety!
  • Garden of the Gods RV Park is nice although a little expensive and about 20 min to AFA. A little farther up the hill is Diamond RV Park and it is a great park for a reasonable price. About 40 Min to the AFA though.
  • Just stayed at Pikes Peak Rv resort in Manitou Springs this past week. It was a nice small park in/near town(Manitou Springs), some sites were very close together but it was very clean, quiet, and had great customer service. Also has a free city shuttle to Manitou Springs and is next to the Garden of the Gods.
  • Mueller State Park near Manitou Springs in really nice. They don't have FHU, but they do have clean restroom/shower facilities.

Cheyenne Mountain SP is suppose to be nice as well.

Look at the special info on the Fam Camp site. A lot of the bases will let/require you CHECK you weapon into the base armory for the duration of your stay.

Defeats the purpose of having a CCW, doesn't it? :-(

Thanks, Lonny, both for the kind words and for your service. I'd figured he could sponsor us in, but giving up my CCW just to stay there isn't worth it. I'll spend my $$ elsewhere. Hell, the USAF's getting enough of our bucks to put these kids through school. :-)

  • The only place that we have stayed in the area is the Colorado Heights Resort. It is an OK park. It was free to us using our ROD Membership. I don't know the rates for pay customers.
