17 miles from Savannah is Fort McAllister State Park.
I've been to both and my pick would be Savannah. I agree with all of the above except that there are a couple of sites (ie: 42) where a dish will work..if you are patient, have lots of cable and are good at shooting through breaks in the trees.
Nothing bad about Ft McAllister either but you can't beat the convenience of Skidaway if your goal is to visit Savannah.
If you do choose Charleston instead it is nice too. James Island County Park is first rate and has shuttle ($) service into Charleston.
