Absolutely, Yellowstone! Best vacation we ever had. We held a family reunion there in 2007 and I'm telling you, a week doesn't go by that we don't reminisce about it.
If you don't want to go to Yellowstone, go to New Mexico and Arizona. See Carlsbad Caverns and Roswell, just to say you did. The kids will get a kick out of it. Head on over to Grand Canyon. Be sure to stop at the Painted Desert/Petrified forest on the way. Drop down to Route 66 when you're done.
If you've got kids with you, stay in Williams at the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel. Awesome place and they have a train that takes you up there for about 6 hours. On the way back "bandits" board the train and hold up the passengers. A singing cowboy entertains guests and there are docents that give you a lot of details about the area. Honestly, for my kids that was plenty of time. If it were just the two of us, we'd have stayed at GC for a couple days.
If you don't want to go *there*, try out the Black Hills, then drive on over to Devil's Tower and get yourself a copy of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." We showed it to our kids after dark and it scared them just enough to be fun. It's a pretty interesting place. Just don't take your rig up to the top~
