I'm one of the old timers and I still manage to camp in the wilderness at Stae Park campgrounds.
I admit the generator seems a little bit heavier each year I camp but as long as I can avoid the Posh-Disney type camp-o-Rama RV Parks I will.
You don't have to go west to Wyoming to find isolation. There are national forest service campsite that are tough to find in the green mountains of Vermont that offer isolation deep in the forest and they are free! I bring extra water and can last a long time if I feel like it. My wife complains some but no-one is perfect.
Maine has thousands of acres in the Great Maine Northwoods open to rough camping and you can use logging roads to access most of that area. You can be the only soul camping on a backwoods lake....now that is a feeling beyond compare! For stuff like that I leave the wife home and bring a shotgun to harvest grouse and a fiishin' pole to add variety to the menus. Peace, quiet and a canoe...life doesn't get any better than that.
