What to purchase....TT, 5er, MH, ???

Hello all-
I have previously owned a 24' and 32' TT, 30' MH-A, and 30' 5er. I tent camped as a scout when I was young. I'm 52 now, and not too interested in tent camping very often. I will do it for my kids so they can experience it, but not too often!

DW and DS-15 aren't much into tent camping. DS-10, who has Autism, loves the outdoors and is happy being outside doing whatever I involve him with. DS15 is your typical electronic gadget seeking teenager who seems to prefer indoors to outdoors!

We like to go to beaches, lakes, and mountains....all of which we have in CA. We will go to state parks but prefer small quiet places and do not like crowded parks/places. 90% of our travels will be in CA.

DW likes to explore towns, places, etc. I like fishing, exploring, boating. DS-15 will have to come along!!

We are looking for our next used camper for our travels. Want to spend as much time as we can with our DS15, as he'll be on his own soon. DS-10 will be with DW and I for our lifetime.

So, we are confused about our next rig. I have an older 1992 F350 that will tow anything up to 10,000 GVWR. It is kept in great condition and only has 60K original miles. So, TT or 5er are possible. If a new TV happens at a later date, it can be either a 1/2 or 3/4 ton, depending on what rig we have.

Used MH are about the same cost as a used 5er (within our budget of $20K). Since we like to explore while camping/Rving, we need a vehicle once we get there. I don't want to tow a vehicle, so we lean towards a TT or 5er. Not sure if we should consider Hybrids, as wife is concerned about wildlife (bears) smashing through the canvas and the colder temps of the Hybrids.

What say those that have experienced similar circumstances or similar travels?

Thanks!

  • Only you can answer what will work for you.

We went first with a trailer then a fifth wheel, we did not consider a Motorhome as we then have another drive train to maintain.

I hope you have better luck with your 92 I had a 92 F250 & replaced the transmission @ 89K and @ 112K & was going again when I traded. (That was several years ago though). I pulled a 4500 lb camper with it.
  • Thoughts on this unit? It appears well constructed (from research) and Keystone probably stopped building this model as it was too costly and sales did not reach goals. It looks like a fiberglass Airstream! I like the clean modern lines, no graphics, and all fiberglass construction. 50ga fresh water and 30ga G/B.

  • With all info you provided, I too would go with a TT. 30' or less would allow you to go to almost any campground in the Sierra's where you can do your fishing, boating, exploring. Either side of the Sierra's would be great for you and your sons.....lots of bears tho, so DW might have a concern or two.

When you go camping, tell older son to leave his electronic gadgets at home and involve him 100% in the fishing, camping, boating experiences. I guarantee you he will enjoy them and forget all about his smart phone.

  • Since you live in CA and like to camp on beaches in CA I'd go for the MH so you won't be limited to the 55 mph as you would with a TT or 5ver. Only problem with MH is the smog testing.
  • We don't have kids but if I were in your situation I would look at toy hauler 5th wheels or TTs. The garage area provides the flexibilty to carry bikes and other "toys" for the kids, when parked and unloaded it allows the kids to have their area inside. The garage provides additional living space and separate beds for the kids.
  • If we had a TV like you do, we would have gotten a 5er, but our budget did not allow for the purchase of both a 5er and a ton truck, so we went with a MH and use our minivan as our toad. When money allows, we will be getting a Jeep Rubicon to use as a toad. We like to explore also, but the van limits where we can go.
