Regular soaps on;y kill the adults, and IMHO I wouldn't use a detergent. Plain shampoos and actually many flea shampoos do NOT take care of the flea eggs and larvae stages. Check the label.
Henceforth within a few days the cycle of fleas 'will' continue. If you ever want to have the chance of ridding your pet of flea's and breaking the cycle, use a flea shampoo that states it will prevent eggs from hatching.
In the long run that way you are actually exposing your pet to less bathing.
