Close call! Those cops think of their K-9 assistants as furry officers, so you would indeed have been in the deep end.
I have to wonder, though, why you think a BB gun would help? A real gun will make noise and have some chance of scaring a dog away. So might a starter pistol, for that matter, if scaring it is all you want to do. A BB gun won't scare them. Pfft. Hardly any noise. You'd have to hit the dog to bother it, and the BB gun is more likely to injure it than kill it, which is bad if it turns out to be a mean or rabid dog and in its pain it decides to come after you.
Maybe you should get a regular gun and buy some blank cartridges for it.
