Buddy's getting his teeth cleaned

I know you're thinking, "what's the big deal"? He's 13 and keeps having more and more issues. This morning they drew blood and have found that one of his LFTs (liver enzyme) is elevated. In a couple of weeks we'll deal with that because he has to be tested when he's not stressed.

His teeth are in rough condition, even though we've given him proper chew toys, treats and brushed them. (He hates that). At this point, he has some sort of mouth problem because he cries out if you touch his jowl.

He also has a growth on his anus near his anal sac, so it will be excised as well.

With the cleaning and excision, we're looking at an $800 bill. He's worth it though.

He's traveled the world with us. People will always stop us and ask to take his picture. So there are pictures of Buddy Blue in Germany, Belgium, France, China, and Japan. He's a gorgeous blue weimaraner.

So I'm sitting here waiting to hear how the surgery went. Poor guy, he'll being sore front and back.
  • Well, he's home, very groggy, minus 4 teeth! The vet said they were in VERY poor shape and had lots of black gunk. No wonder the poor darling was hurting.

I don't know about you and your relationship with your vets...but I don't get a warm feeling with ours. Our vets in MT, WY, and Germany (he was German), treated us like we were the most important patient. I like that. These vets, not so much.

My husband said to her something like... "so he'll be all better and his normal self". Her response was "in what manner?" She said he's old and he's showing it. WHAT THE ...?!! You get the gist.

As far as his elevated enzyme, she mentioned Cushing's. Hmmm.

Anyway, the baby's home, a bit worse for wear. She gave him Previcox for pain. Anyone have experience with this med? His excision is larger than I expected, but she thinks it's benign (she didn't send it for testing). Is that normal? I'm a surgical tech (people) and everything is sent to pathology. I keep thinking things in human terms. But, he IS almost, isn't he?

    Thanks for listening.
  • It is a big deal and at 13 you always have concerns. But the damage that can be caused by bad teeth is well know and in the long run will harm you pup.
Glad you did the pre blood work, I do that with all my guys before surgery no matter what their age.
So keep us posted on Buddy Blue because he is important and what he is going through today IS a big deal !

  • I agree, it is a big deal with Buddy and especially give his age. Keep us posted on his recovery.
  • Good luck Buddy, we will waiting to see your beautiful smile:) Wishing you a speedy recovery.
  • It IS a big deal and he's so worth it. Sending healing thoughts that everything goes well with the surgery and liver tests. What does the vet say about his jaw being sore?
