Camping with a St. Bernard

Hi there. We have always camped with our golden retriever, who passed 4-5 years ago now. This past December we adopted a 1.5 yr old St. Bernard. Looking forward to camping this year as always though i think we will be taking a trip or two earlier than planned while the campgrounds aren't so full to see how she does. Our Golden started as a pup so there were never concerns; Harley...well she's a whole different personality...LOL. We are aware that she'll definitely need a shady site as they don't tolerate the heat too well. Hoping she takes to water so we can do some swimming holes with her as well.

Anyone camp with a St. Bernard who can share their experiences that might be different from what we were used to with the Golden? I know every pup is as different just as every kid is different but you just never know. :)

WOW, sorry for the large pic! I used the used the easy upload link in the tutorials...LOL

  • Dont forget the slobber towels. LOTS OF THEM!!! There is a couple that camp near us 3 or 4 times a tear that have a pair of them in a 25 foot trailer. They are the happiest dogs at the campground every time I see them.
  • Love camping with the dogs. Outside of the heat, just make sure it has boundaries. I hate dogs in campgrounds that rule their owners. It's pathetic. Dogs are happy when they have rules and boundaries.
  • Gorgeous! Just remember the slime rags! :B Had a bloodhound, so I speak from experience! I would just introduce her slowly, short trips, limited stays and just watch how she deals with strangers.

You gonna need a BIG pooper scooper!!

And one of dem thar horsie trailers.
  • At our peak, we camped with 2 goldens and a lab cross - equivalent weight to a St. Bernard :B. Aside from the saliva, shouldn't be an issue as long as she enjoys the travel and camping. Most dogs adapt pretty quickly. Good luck.
  • We have a 170 lb Black newfoundland and she hates camping Always was in the camper if too hot,Always people wanting to see her cause she is like a bear and .She is to big for the stairs and we have to find a sitter for her and my other 2 now .
