cat peeing everywhere - long

We took in a stray about 3 mos ago. The vet was guessing that he was about 8 mos at the time. We had him neutered right away and haven't had any issues with spraying or peeing. He's been a really good cat.

Last month my sil brought home an unneutered stray that jumped in his car and after two days we started finding pee everywhere so the cat found a new home. Everything was fine once again.

I operate a home daycare and a tiny infant started on Monday. She's a good baby and rarely fusses. The cat jumped in the crib twice on Monday and I scolded him both times.

Now, he is peeing everywhere. Tues and Wed he peed on my bed. Yesterday he peed in the pack and play I use for another child. He peed on the floor leading into the playroom. This morning he peed in a toy bucket.

I can't afford to let the baby go, but I don't want to get rid of the cat either as he is normally a good cat.

Any suggestions?

  • Your cat is definitely marking his spot..

With the new baby, do they have a cat in their home? Your cat could smell another on the babies clothes.

Please be very careful with your cat and this baby. He is likely jealous and could harm the baby.

Even if your cat is not jealous, cats are known to smoother babies. They get in the crib to cuddle up to the warmth of the baby and sadly can smoother them.

If you must keep your cat, keep it away from any small child.
  • Take him to a vet to see if he has a UTI. If that doesn't work, and this is behavioral, you probably have no choice but to find a shelter that will take him under the circumstances.

Humans ... been there ... done that... I'll take the cat!
  • You have triggered marking of territory in your cat. I would bet your cat is also rubbing up against things more now as well. This is another form of territorial marking.

You can try a pheromone spray to try and stop this behavior it MAY work
  • He probably smells the diapers and that's triggering marking. UNLESS this cat has a UTI. Might be worth having the vet check him.

Maybe he's upset you wouldn't allow him in the crib. You never know...
  • If I was sending my baby to a home-run daycare, I would be very cautious of any pets. Allergies, scratching, biting, etc. Get rid of the cat. I know others will suggest trying all sorts of 'save the cat' remedies, but I think the baby is your priority.
  • I would tell you to put it where we put our so called pets, in the aquarium, might not work with a cat though.
