Cavalier owners

The dw and I are the owners of a very rambunctious nine month old tri-color Cavalier. He is busy all the time trying to find something to chew next. We want a breed that is good to travel with but also for my wife to use in her tutoring business. He already is the hit at her office with the kids. The main issue I have with "Beau" is his insistent barking at everything. Is this common for this breed? We are looking forward to many trips and adventures with our new pet.

  • I have a black and tan cavalier that has been traveling since she was 10 weeks as well (now 7 years old). I came from having large dogs and never thought I would own a smaller dog but she has been absolutely the best traveling and life companion. I just wish she didn't snore so loud!! I hope you two can work it out as everything I have heard from cav owners is they wouldn't trade them for the world. Like others have stated work with him they are very smart dogs. Good luck.
  • At this moment we have three rescued Cav's. We had four but one passed from the breeds inherent heart problems. Since the rescue's we have were for the most part, not socialized well, barking has at times been excessive under certain circumstances. They do tend to bark at other dogs but can be calmed quickly by quieting them or if possible, introducing them to the other dogs.

I will say this, when we had all four of them, all from different backgrounds, they were the best behaved, wonderful and friendly lap dogs one could ever want.(for a pack of doggies) We're big advocates of the breed even though losing one to CHF was heart breaking. Good luck with your bundle of Joy!
  • Our cavalier is not a barker. We trained in early what is acceptable behavior. Every time he barks, firmly state "no bark". When he stops even for a second or 2, say good boy and give him a tiny kibble treat. Divert his attention to something else.

It's worked for us well. Although...at times he loses control and cries like he's being murdered (no exaggeration). We're working on this issue now.

Cavaliers are wonderful dogs. Work with him a few times a day to encourage a bark and then tell him when to stop.

I hope you find this helpful.
  • We have a 5 yr. old tri-color Cavalier and he is a great traveler. We started traveling with him when he was 10 weeks old. He sleeps on the console between us until he hears the engine noise change or feels us slowing, then he looks up to see where we are.

When we are home, he only barks at deer and bears, but not at small critters like squirrels, rabbits, etc. When we travel, he barks at deer, bears, and chipmonks until we correct him. Then he just stares at them quietly.

He wakes up happy and goes to bed happy and he likes everyone. He is smart, funny and well behaved.

He is the best dog we have ever had!
  • Hi TURBOPILOT, I'll include a link, http://www.castlecreekcavaliers.com/
Mrs. Tucker is the breeder that I'm going to use when I retire in 3 months, she is extremely knowledgeable about the breed. She not only teaches the puppy class, the good dog class, and is involved in helping Cav lovers achieve their therapy dog certification.
She might be a great source to ask questions about Cavs.
She is not a puppy mill, but a well known breeder.

  • We have a Cav that is about six years old. He usually barks when he is in his territory. He travels with us all the time and is usually pretty quiet traveling.

Once in awhile he will bark at another dog walking by the campsite but not to often.
