Cleft Palate Surgery

My foster kitten, Igor, is going in for surgery to correct a cleft palate tomorrow. The vet has never done one before and I understand it's pretty involved. The question is, has anyone had this done before and what can I expect as far as his recovery?

I did a little research on the process on-line and typically the animal spends a few days in the hospital. Our vet plans on sending him straight home, so I'll be the one providing the nursing care.

Igor is a Siamese about four months old. He has three toes on each foot. He's a very sweet kitten. He has difficulty eating and drinking, so we took him to a vet. She took one quick look and said "he's got a cleft palate." I've never had any experience with an animal with this problem, so it's all new to me.

  • I don't know anything about it but my heart goes out to you and little Igor. I absolutely love Siamese cats. I have had them off and on since I was a small child. I will keep little Igor in my prayers.
  • Thanks. We're pretty apprehensive about the whole thing because none of us has ever had any experience with it.
  • I only remember doing one, and it was very minor - just a small hole in the soft palate. Every other one I encountered I referred to a more qualified surgeon.

    Good luck.
