Actually we don't know that. We need more information. Considering real numbers, it's true that COVID-19 has killed fewer than seasonal flu.
Since we're early in this disease outbreak we don't have accurate numbers of those infected with COVID-19 especially in the US since we have tested so few people.
Mortality rates are usually expressed as a percentage, the number of people who die divided by the number that get infected.
The evidence at this point is that the coronavirus is more deadly (higher mortality rate) than seasonal flu.
