I think I would avoid Purina - their store shelf products are pretty bad things in it.
I know a number of breeders that use ProPlan with great success-longevity, beautiful coats, no health problems. I had a coonhound that ate a food that was based on corn meal. He lived to 13 with no issues. I somehow doubt Purina would have survived this long if their foods were really bad.
Thanks, Dr. Doug. My vet's line of thinking is very similar to yours-find a food that has good nutrition and works for the particular dog. I always second guess my decisions like these although the majority of the time my gut feel is correct. Sounds to me like these ingredients won't hurt but aren't absolutely necessary. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something!
