You can get a pulse on something as important as animal feed problems from a large demographic when it starts happening. Before the internet that was not possible.
Since there is no direct reporting like people have to the cdc to alert of a problem, I think the internet gathering of pet owners reporting like problems has probably saved a few animals along the way.
