Make sure you're feeding the amount of food for what the dog SHOULD weigh, rather than what he does weigh, per your vet's recommendation. Keep in mind, the recommended amounts on dog food bags are often excessive unless your dog is really active.

I used to have to put a big rock in the middle of the dog food bowl to keep one of my Danes from woofing down his food in one gulp. :B

Calvin eats Bambi and Potato. Wish he'd eat, or be OK with Wabbit and Potato. If he would / could, it would save me some big bucks!

Oh, I cut Calvin's serving by approx. 1/4. You can add (form what has been posted in the past) green beans to give the food intake some bulk.

Our Boston Terrier had terrible gas and the vet told us to switch to a lamb and rice dog food. We use Diamond brand and it has solved the problem. Recently we were at my sister's house and Radar got into her dogs kibbles and ate the whole bowl...I thought we were going to have to buy gas masks. So I swear by the lamb and rice to help with gas problems...without it we'd be wearing gas masks.

What ever brand you decide on you should be looking at the protein and fat content first. Stay away from the real high protein and fat content dog foods.

Buy a dog food that is low in protein and low in fat. Many dog food companies offer a senior brand, or diet.

Old dogs shouldn't be on excessively high protein foods and overweight dogs need and lower fat content. Some of the new foods out there especially the no grain ones have very high protein and fat contents.

That said. I needed a low protein low fat for my 2 seniors.

Keeps the weight off my old guys yet keeps their coats shiny and them fit and healthy.

We use Trader Joe's Premium Lamb Meal and Rice dog food. We find it to be an excellent, high-quality dog food at a much better price than other premium pet store food.

We feed our dogs Nutro, typically the lamb and rice, and supplement a bit with raw vegetables. Our vet was pleased with the results and encouraged us to continue same. Our last two lab-mix dogs lived over 18 years, with no weight problems or digestive issues.
