I'd bet the body the dog was guarding was alive when the dog found them. It's instinctive behaviour to protect the vulnerable members of the pack. A domestic dog views humans as part of its 'pack'.
That was my first thought as well.
Are there any rv clubs or groups going out there to help? Perhaps already on site?
