Dog liability insurance

Does anyone know of a company that writes dog liability insurance policies? Due to various circumstances, this is NOT a situation where it would be covered, or could be added to, either homeowners or renters insurance. Just looking for a stand-alone liability policy. Does this varmint exist? If it makes any difference, the dog is not on the aggressive breeds list (Weimaraner).

  • Someone makes an anonymous complaint. You dog has NOT bitten.

The manager kicks your dog out.

Why would you want to return to this joint?

I don't think I need one, I know I need one cuz that's what the owner of this fine 55+ establishment told me.

My dog has always been on-leash in the park and has never bitten anyone. Unfortunately, someone decided to file a complaint against the dog and required the manager to treat it as an anonymous complaint. So, I was given no details about who complained or what the alleged incident was, just that the dog would have to leave the park.

Unfair? You bet. After gathering signatures on a petition and sending a letter to the owner, the owner said the dog would be allowed back in with a separate liability policy. Still unfair? You bet, but hopefully cheaper than a lawyer.
  • Not really gettin' the question- my liability insurance covers any bad thing that happens to folks as a result of my actions, which includes anything my dog/other pets might do. This unless the animal's type/breed is specifically restricted in the policy. Homeowner's is first line of defense, but I actually had a Farmer's auto liability policy pay off one time in a dog bite incident, and it happened when the dog got off her tieout at home! Nothin' whatever to do with the car....

Unless this particular animal has already been involved in some sort of kerfuffle, I don't understand the need for a stand alone policy-?

X2 ON THE UMBRELLA. Question your agent for your rig about liability.

  • I don't think one exists.

I will tell you that my homeowners 'required' I pay for a separate policy to cover my horses on my property or they couldn't issue a home owners policy.

I asked for an explanation of the coverage. This is a grim description but it is what he told me.

If my horse got out and was hit by a car and the person died. The insurance company would cover the death of the person and not my horse.

If the person was injured with long term health issues I could still be sued for it and the insurance company did not cover that.

So my guess is that you would be hard pressed to find a 'reputable' insurance company that would issue a liability policy just for an animal to cover a lawsuit.

Albiet there are 'so-called' ones listed on the internet but I'd bet that when the lawsuit hits the courts those fly by night company's would leave you hanging out to dry.
