Dakota was eager to go with wife and some guests. He somehow ended up under the car.took him to two Vets. they said road rash. He had/has a hard time laying down. He tries to back into laying down. We give him an anti inflametory and a pain pill.He appears some better since last Monday but can't seem to motivate his tail. It hangs limp with a tiny bit of curl. He acts older and is constantly at my side and wanting me to rub his head and chin, moreso than before.When he used the bathroom, we used the hose to clean him up the other day.He bit wife when she tried to help him at first. but she is okay with a wound that is healing.Tomorrow we take him to another Vet. Others that have seen their dog get hurt: does it sound like his tail is permanently hurt?

Not sure. Im not sure his tail is the thing to be concerned about at this point.I am sure sorry to hear about Dakota. Them pets become a major part of the family, and you hurt as bad as they do in these situations.. Best of Luck with your baby, and prayers of comfort to you all.

When you are in pain, do you want to do things, do you feel "happy"? My guess is that Dakota is sore, in a rotten mood, and just needs to be left alone for awhile, to heal.Eventually, that tail will start wagging again (even if it was broken), when he feels better.Do what the Vets suggest, with regard to pain management and antibiotics.Good luck

Glad to hear he's feeling better. It's hard to see them when they aren't feeling well and you can't help much.

This morning he was looking out the rear door so I opened it for him. He took off in hot pursuit of either a rabbit or a deer, probably a deer. I couldn't see at the edge of the woods with bright sunlight clearly. Later son went out of garage and said he hear snorts in the edge of the woods. Deer waiting until it was clear to come graze or whatever. Snort probably meant one gave the alarm and the all hitailed it up the hill.
Tail still hangs a little limp but he seems to be him old self.

Sorry to hear about everything you have had to go through, but glad to know Dakota is doing better. Hope and pray that he continues to improve. Keep us updated.

Rear legs, pelvis and tail injuries are the most common to dogs when HBC. It seems the dogs are quick enough to turn to run away, but if the whole thing happens fast enough they get the rear end smacked.

Road rashes are very common. Every time I see one I think of what must happen to a motorcycle rider when they lay the bike down. One good reason for leather.

The behavior is very common for tail injuries - either fracture, dislocation or sprain. If there is feeling and circulation in the tail, all should be OK.

Without examining this guy, I couldn't tell you for sure whether or not I'd strongly recommend X-Rays, but always a safe thing to do.

No all three Vets didn't think they needed too but would be glad to if we wanted them.

We had a thread on sprained tail a couple months back. Pretty common. You can dig back through Doug's posts and probably find it.

My dog Callie (now deceased) had a sprained tail twice. Her tail just hung there, no wagging or anything. The first time it happened I thought some kids must have pulled her tail. The next time I took her to the vet because I knew nobody had pulled her tail.. Both times it healed on it's own, within a day or two.

They said road rash. He had a place on left hip that looked like slipped skin or something. His tail hung down and wasn't moving it.
Didn't lose any hair but was red underneath.
I wasn't there when she rolled over it. The tires must not have rolled over him because it is 4300lbs. Don't know exactly how he was hit. Maybe the tire did roll over him.
He has feeling in the tail, just sore. Take back in a few weeks to see if any of the nerves or which ones were damaged. Don't think the tail will have to be amputated. He was sprightly earlier chasing his ball, a little, for the first time.
