I'm looking for an update on this. How has your dog been doing?
I'm very curious as we will be in a similar situation soon. We are looking at a 44 foot, 24K weight rated fifth wheel trailer for full-time living to be towed by a Ram 5500. We have 2 adults and 3 full-time children (plus one "part-time" child from a previous marriage that goes between families), so our truck cab will be full. We also have a Tibetan Mastiff that we want to bring along.
I grew up vacationing in Class A and C RVs and we always brought our dogs and cats with, they never had any issues. That, plus knowing that so many other types of animals travel in trailers, I naturally assumed it wouldn't be a problem for my dog to ride in the fifth wheel during transport. When I posted on an RV forum to ask about how to keep the fifth wheel climate controlled for the dog, I got blasted by the animal cruelty crowd and started wondering if we need to find another home for our dog. Reading this post makes me feel like its still possible to bring her with.
I've looked into dog boxes that are built for the hunting dog crowd, but I'm worried about climate control for those (specifically too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter). So, I'm wondering how things are going for cwboyscooby -- any problems? Did your wife ride in the fifth wheel? Is it smoother over the truck bed or over the axles? Does the dog do better free to roam or contained in a kennel?
Anyone else wanting to offer advice? I would appreciate polite, well-meaning replies versus just telling me that I'm rude and cruel.
