As we were into dog shows at one time, all our dogs have been trained from birth to stay in an exercise pen when put there. When we had Standards, we used a 3' one that they could look over the top, but now we only have a toy, so we can use a smaller one. When we had two bigger dogs, we used two of the ex pens hooked together for more space.
