Our cavalier sleeps in a crate at home, but with us in the TC. He's great and is so adaptable. He's perfect in the boat while fishing.
I'm sure your dog will only enhance your camping trips. Teach him proper manners and clean up after him and you'll have few issues. Dogs are family, they want to be included. Relax and have fun! BTW, bring him things to do as you would a 2 year old. They get bored too.
