Flat Coat Retriever

Has anybody ever heard of a Flat Coat Retriever? Have any of you ever had one?
We thought we rescued a Lab three years ago. But met a couple last summer and she immediately mentioned we had a nice looking flat coat. HUH? After that I went back to the fiver and got online. Sure enough Max does look exactly like a flat coat and not a Lab.

  • One thing about them, they sure will keep you young. Either that or in the insane asylum. Actually Max has been extremely good. We moved into the fiver full time mid Sept and as long as I get him to the off leash park a couple of times a day and a walk around the park he is happy. It is not perfect but he is satisfied.
  • You have to have a sense of humor to own a Flattie. Ours lived to be 14 and we still miss him. We have a Golden now, much calmer personality.
  • Our neighbors have had two over the years. They are wonderful dogs but the "perpetual puppy" description fits. We love them as neighbor dogs but are too old to choose one for ourselves. lizzie
  • Flat coat retriever is a well established AKC breed. They are known for their juvenile behavior well into their later years. If you like a perpetual puppy, the Flat Coat is for you! Some say they are a black Golden Retriever, but that is not true. they may resemble a Golden, but are not related.
  • I had a flat coat retriever a few years back. Great dog. Lived to be 17 years old. From age 0 to 15 was a little hyper, could not keep him out of the water if any was near, but very loving dog and protective of my daughter by pure instinct. Sheds a lot. Needs regular grooming.
  • A friend had a lovely Flat Coat. They competed in obedience, and the dog earned an OTCH (Obedience Trial Championship), which is called the PhD for dogs.
  • A great breed of dog. Used for hunting and retrieving. We used to raise German Shorthaired Pointers and met with Flatcoat Retriever people all the time.

Similar......Lab has shorter hair and broader

The Flat Coat looks a lot like our Border Collie/Lab Mix or I guess that would be she looks a lot like a Flat Coat
  • Never heard of that breed before. Just did a Google "image" search on "flat coat dog" ... lots of images came up ... Nice looking dog! (I'll stay with my dachshund though).
