Flea AND tick treatment

I've been using Advantage Plus because we need the tick protection but now I am reading that Advantage may no longer be working as well because of a build-up of resistance. Any truth to that? What does work for tick protection? Asking for my Mom's barn cats. Down to the last five in her feral colony and they are becoming more like pets.
Thank you for your suggestions.

Brain freeze this morning - Not Advantage - FRONTLINE Plus for Cats that is what I meant to type.
  • Bravecto is good for flea treatment, found the ***Link Removed*** a few months ago. But it should be only prescribed by a vet. I think if the infestation is not very hard it's better to use natural remedies. Some essential oils and smelly plants can repel ticks and fleas so there is no need to use chemical remedies all the time.
  • Here is the PDF of the Bravecto insert

This product came out after I retired, but in discussion with my colleagues they are happy with it.

My general philosophy on medications, diet and flea treatment/prevention is that if what you are doing is working with no side effects, change isn't always the best choice.

That being said, ease of dosing is a consideration in some individuals - doing something every three months is easier than daily, weekly or monthly.
  • Not trying to hijack post but would like know about Bravecto. We have small dogs - 4 to 6 lbs. Been afraid that something in their system for 3 months might be to strong for them. Anyone know? I was at vet yesterday and forgot to ask. Right now using Nexgard
  • We started using Bravecto 3 months ago. Our dog hasn't had one hotspot since we started using it. Its one chewable tablet every 12 weeks.
  • Like everything else you read, especially on the Internet, check the source for reliability.

  • Been using Sensaio tick and flea collars now for a while. They seem to work really well. 1800petmeds you can get them fairly reasonable. And they last 8 months.
  • Thank you Doug - I should have mentioned that I am using the Frontline Plus for cats not dogs. I had not heard of Bravecto - will look it up too. Appreciate your thoughts and time in replying.
  • Because of the cat's particular sensitivity to most parasiticides, products are different than the dog products and many are not labeled for tick prevention.

As far as efficacy, it's mostly a regional phenomenon - certain products work better in one area than another. We still have good luck with Advantage.

Bravecto is labeled for both fleas and ticks and does seem to work well.
