Gretchen gave us a scare, but all is well

So, yesterday morning I noticed a 1" by 3" stripe of blood on Gretchen's bed. :E I gave her an examination, and discovered that it appeared as though one of her several sebaceous cysts had burst, releasing all the yuckiness and blood onto her bed. She was not in any distress at all, so I slightly clipped the hair around the area and applied some Neosporin.

Called our vet's office, but did not get in until today, as we determined it was not really an emergency. Turns out it was what I suspected, and they expressed more gunk out of it, cleaned it up, and applied something to help it scab over. Our vet did not want to bandage it, but wanted it to be able to air out. Now it's 750mg of Cephalexin, twice daily for ten days. Uggg . . . . I'm pretty sure it's going to cause her to have loose stools, judging from past experience. :p

  • Forti-Flora is one by Purina that is species specific for dogs (also a cat version), but any human product should work.

Being totally ignorant of such things, is there a brand or type you might suggest? :@

Having a boxer, a tender tummy is a given. I give him Digest-All with each of his meals, and it works well for him. I found it at Vitamin Shoppe in the pet section, but you can find it online, as well. A powder, it has digestive enzymes, prebiotics, and probiotics in it, and a little bit goes a long way, sprinked over food. Once opened, it needs to be kept in the fridge.

  • Good news. Try a probiotic or live culture yogurt (like activia) to help counteract the antibiotic side effects.
  • Poor thing. Hopefully the "Lose" Stools will not be too much of a problem. I hope she heals up quickly.
  • I'm so glad Gretchen is doing okay. I have had those burst on our Boston that we lost back in Feb.
  • Poor Gretchen! Glad she's ok though. Those sebaceous cysts are nasty. I had several of them removed on previous dogs I owned and they can get quite large if left untreated. Hope she heals quickly with little discomfort, and may all of you have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
