Hip dysplasia in labs need advice from the experienced

Have you asked a vet if it is harmful to let him run? Our daughters black lab has this and they were told to discourage any running or play that involved changing direction often. He has trouble getting up and down now. Did know someone who had a different breed of dog with hip displasia that did have the surgery and it worked well for them/their dog. Vet's office did the surgery, no special surgical center was required.
