How to liquefy pills...?Sparky now has to take a pill everyday for the rest of his life and he is not into that at all. He will not even eat a pill pooper without the pill, he only likes real food and his dog food but this pill is for his liver and has to be taken without food. I am thinking that maybe I can liquefy the pills and then just squirt it into his mouth/throat. I hate forcing it into his mouth and pushing it down his throat everyday and he is not happy about it either.Any suggestions on liquefying them? He is also only a 9# Chi and has a bad attitude about pills.

First, I'd check with the vet or pharmacy to see if they can provide a liquid form, quite often they can. If not, then check to see if there are any problems with you dissolving the pill in a liquid to give to him. I had one med for one of my cats that could not be dissolved or it would lose its potency. If the vet says you can dissolve it, crush it as best you can, then add it to a liquid, either water or something else he might like (I used chicken broth for my cat on the pills I could do this with). You still have to struggle a bit to hold them and be able to squirt the liquid in their mouth, but they can't spit it out like a pill.

For a previous dog we were required to administer one of her meds by liquefying the pill. We crushed it up in a little water and then sucked it into a syringe (without the needle). We then squirted it into her mouth between here cheek and gum... The vet gave us the syringe.

If you can't liquefy the pills, you may want to look into these: Dog Piller. Each one can be used for several uses before they wear out; hence the reason I gave you the link for a box of multiple pillers. Water can also be added, allowing the pill to go down easier and avoid damaging the dog's throat.

We crushed up a pill and let it sit in warm water - Vet provided a free plastic syringe (no needle) and we just squired onto dogs tongue. Worked just fine.

We had to give our dog pills several times a day for the rest of his life. I got him in a corner and pushed it down. After about a few months he just gave up fighting me. The toughest part is training him to accept the meds.

The "no food" rule with this med makes it difficult!

You might ask your vet how strict the rule is, and whether you can mix it with a small amount of something tasty. Or maybe doggie is going to be mad no matter what?

Thanks for the replies..

I checked and it can be dissolved. I check with a pharmacy and it is $35 to have them do this... crazy price.

He will not do peanut butter, or cheese... I ground up one pill and put it in small piece of ham and let it soak into the meat,,, he wont take it from me...but if I leave it on the floor he will come and shake the heck out of it before eating it....

I went and got a plastic syringe (no needle) and will see how that works.

Ask your vet, too, if there is a similar med available as a subcutaneous injection. Those are easy to give at home (I give my kitty insulin twice a day).

Some pills can be in a time release formula designed to be given as a solid pill, be sure to know if they can be dissolved in water.

We have had success in covering pills in peanut butter.
