One of our dogs ate a rug string, the string was sticking out of her butt. I grabbed it and she took off, string must have been 15 ft. long..She was fine after that but I am glad I noticed it when I did.
Just a note of caution: If you encounter this situation, DON'T grab it and pull!!! Take your dog or cat to your vet as soon as you can. String can act like a rope saw in the intestines and you don't know how long it is or where it is in the intestines. If it's balled up, won't be a problem but if it's stretched out over several inches to feet, you will have a problem.
The worst case I had was a cat, presented with sewing thread hanging out the rectum. Gentle traction didn't work. We ended up doing surgery, the other end was looped around the tongue. This string went the entire length of the GI tract. It took 5 enterotomy incisions in different spots to completely remove the entire length of string. Fortunately the intestine was still in reasonable shape and I didn't have to remove any damaged intestine, but we were probably hours away from a perforated gut.
