Doxie mom, we for sure never touch him unless he knows we're there. When we get up for work, I turn on a light in the bathroom so there's some soft light in the bedroom, so as not to startle Puffy (who's startled anyway, no matter how quietly and slowly, and close to the ground we approach him, being sure not to look him in the eyes - lol!).
I gave him a few bites of kibble we have (Victor Grain Free Salmon), which is nice and smelly; also it's very tiny, which is good, given Puffy's small size (9.3 lb.). He won't touch the kibble the rescue sent (not a great one). After our two dogs ate tonight, I put Nash outside and held Maddie so neither one would stare at Puffy through the x-pen. Joe, Maddie, and I went into the kitchen so he'd think we were gone, and Puffy actually ate maybe 3 bites (one at a time, walking around checking things out between bites) - better than nothing! He licked his chops for several minutes afterwards, so he obviously enjoyed it. He kept walking by the bowl wanting to eat more; hunger's starting to get the better of him. Hopefully, he'll eat even more tomorrow morning. I'm not trying to feed him anything by hand; he's too afraid of people right now.
He does enjoy wandering the house and exploring, attached to a 15 foot web long line. He's quite curious and pokes his nose into all sorts of nooks and crannies. He's also not afraid of our other two dogs at all; just deathly afraid of people. He trembles and shakes if you just look at him or get near him. On the other hand, if we pick him up and sit quietly on the couch, he'll calm down fairly soon and enjoy being held - as long as we hold still.
