Is CARRAGEENAN in pet foods a bad thing ?

Possibly, I'm not sure and have been reading up on this. It is seaweed which has been processed with chemical solvents. Probably plain old seaweed is OK; solvents.......?

There are two types of carrageenan: degraded and un-degraded. Both kinds may give your pet intestinal inflammation. There is human, food safe un-degraded carrageenan in ice cream, yogurt, etc.

So...I have donated all the canned dog/cat food, with carrageenan, to the local animal shelter and bought new canned food without this additive.

Not sure about dry food. We have been buying Wysong and ZiwiPeak for dog and GO dry for cat. No carrageenan in them. Except ZiwiPeak has "dried kelp". I will ask mfr about the particulars.

Anyone out there had pet problems associated with carrageenans added to pet foods?

  • Carageenan is a mixture of stuff that they use in ice creams, yogurts, etc. For most people it's not a problem. But it IS a problem for some people. Somethings that product can be up to 40% MSG (monosodium glutamate)......for me, it's a no-no. Up to you....
  • I searched the veterinary literature and found only obscure references to general pharmacology and effects in rats, nothing in dogs and cats.

I'm not familiar with this product and have never heard of a problem related to its use.

As far as solvent being a problem, it depends on what solvent and how its used. The most common solvent in nature is water, certainly not a problem.

I'd be interested in any studies showing problems in humans, dogs or cats. Evidently this is a common ingredient in vegetarian foods as well as many others.
