Leash Training

Our Grandson has a 115# Rottweiler that would drag his girl friend where ever he wanted to go so I took the dog for a walk. I held him beside me on a short leash about three feet long. Whenever he would pull it would lift his front feet off the ground. Within a couple hundred yards he was walking with me without pulling. I never heard if the dog remembered his lesson. I think dogs may know when they can be the boss. Our Pit would drag my wife, so I told her I'd teach him how to go for a nice walk. He would walk out front with a slacked leash. Nothing to teach. My wife isn't able to go for walks anymore and I can use a little help on an upgrade so his little pull once in a while isn't too bad. I don't discourage it... ;)

We used a Sporn harness on Toby, our bloodhound. Worked very well. With all his wrinkles even a pinch collar didn't work well. The Sporn pinches in the "armpit" and should keep the dog from pulling, without fear of injury.

I think I'll ask Raylene's trainer about that today when we go to a training class. We've worked on the pulling issue for months, and use a Freedom No-Pull Harness. But as one of my friends says, they seem like they build up an immunity to the pressure of the harness. I do see some improvement but there are times I need to have more control.

I agree with the use of a Gentle Leader. My chocolate lab was uncontrollable without it. He had drug me around before we got one. We were at a CG one time and a women saw what was going on and let me use hers for a trial and he was totally the opposite with it on. We purchased ours the next morning. He has since got used to it and when he sees it knows that he is going for a walk and is ready to have it put on him. JMO

Yes! Very good! We had seen larger dogs with Gentle Leaders for years at the park. When we got Darcy, a stubborn little min-pin, we struggled so much walking her that we wondered if there was a small size GL model. There is! We found one on Amazon and as with your girl, the change was immediate. Occasionally, people ask if she is wearing a muzzle. We tell them no, it is "power steering." They laugh and immediately understand. Bud undoes the nose loop for the fast-walk part of their daily excursion. Darcy looks forward to that and behaves perfectly. It was a learning curve, though. Glad it is working out so well for you.

My Amstaff used to pull and went with a harness that clipped in front by her chest. If she pulled it turned her into me.

Prunella put up no resistance what so ever. Even let me put the leader on with no balking. She sat patiently, we hooked up and off we went. There was a tug the very first time she came to the end of the leash but after that never again. I guess I am just really surprised at the result!

I tried one of those. My dog did loop de loops and went totally wacko. I use a choke collar. Pull on it and give a voice command. It works for me. Training a pet requires patience and being consistant. I have an ACD. Very hard to train. They get it. I am boss. No questions. You have to he firm when training any pet.
