Liver! (No ailments involved..LOL!)

I mentioned buying some freeze-dried liver to use for treats, etc with stubborn little Ben (9 weeks old) - OH MY GOSH!! I am now the Pied Pier of Puppies. The most amazing, interesting person on EARTH - Ben can't wait to follow me to Hades and back! In two days - he's gone from "pouty, stubborn little puppy who doesn't listen/runs away from me/won't walk on a leash" to SUPER-PUPPY!! No leash (keep in mind this is behind our building at work, far from traffic) - trots right out to potty, then returns and sits in front of me waiting for a piece of that canine equivalent of crack cocaine! And because he only gets his "drug" when he potties outside - he's more than willing to do anything to get my attention regarding his need to go OUT.

I shave a little bit of it into his puppy food, to ensure that he eats the entire (tiny) bowlful. It's easy to break into smaller bits. This stuff is worth its weight in gold!!!! AND it's made in America (at least the Stewart's brand that I bought, is)

I ordered it through Amazon - the big bucket was only $3 more than the one half its size...LOL!

Ahh, Amazon! How did we ever survive without it? I had recently found an acceptable made in USA treat at PetSmart and just checked to see if Amazon might have a more economical size of it. Yep! Thanks for the reminder. :B
    Pur-Luv mini treats

Only thing is I just have to remember to take those darn pieces out of my pockets after the shows before taking it to the cleaners.

ROFL!!!!!!!!! I'm picturing you having ALL the neighborhood dogs following along... :-)

We went to a dog show in our RV last year with our friends who have doggies that compete in agility and obedience. Wondered what the trainers were slipping to the pups when they did things right, and my pal said it was liver. Who knew? Canine cocaine seems to work!!

:B Yup we spend an hour or so before the shows boiling beef liver in garlic water. Then pat dry and cut into small squares and use as bait. Haven't met a dog yet that didn't go crazy over it. Only thing is I just have to remember to take those darn pieces out of my pockets after the shows before taking it to the cleaners.

  • My guys prefer tiny bits of hot dogs. Spike will take liver treats but won't let his lips touch it! I dry the hotdog bits in the microwave. Cheap and easy, and I can carry them in my pocket. I'm glad you found his currency ;-)

Ah, you found the magic potion! :B Is this something you get at PetSmart? Years ago, when I tried liver treats, they loved them but got the runs something awful. Liver seemed too rich for our small dogs. Glad you found something to get the little bugger's attention. :W

I cut the pieces up so they're TINY - not even 1/4" x 1/4" - and he only gets a few. So far, it's not upsetting his tummy.

Just call me "Magic Mama, the Pusher of Canine Cocaine" :-)

  • That's an interesting idea. I will try to remember this for the next time we have a rescue that isn't trained yet. Sounds like a winner.
