FEMA and the AVMA have veterinary action teams that can be dispatched to these types of emergencies. They aid the shelters and vets in the community to be able to deal with the disaster. Many humane organizations and rescues coordinate through these entities.

AVMA response to Okla. tornadoes
The AVMA has been following the reports of destruction and damage caused by the recent tornadoes in Oklahoma. Our hearts go out to all affected by these storms. The AVMA has reached out to the Oklahoma State Veterinary Medical Association and is in communication with FEMA and our partners in the National Animal Rescue and Sheltering Coalition (NARSC) on ways to best assist in the response and recovery process. The AVMA's Veterinary Medical Assistance Teams are on standby to provide assistance with veterinary medical care if requested by the state of Oklahoma. We will post updates to the AVMA@Work blog as we learn more.
