More on BenBen - still with us! kind of long

He is still here, but I am surprised I have not had a massive heart attack!! The latest was in Elkhart IN and he went into hysterical scratching and tearing at his skin. Licking all over constantly. Sedated him then he laid in the car and wouldn't get up or put!! Found a great vet in Elkhart that saw him right away and did a great exam and was in touch with BenBen's regular vet. If you go to Elkhart and need a vet this is the group to see. They told me to bring him in ASAP and they took him right in. He woke up fine then and seemed OK. All exam and blood work was OK. :E

Still anxious every night and had to be sedated until I got him home. Thought we would make arrangements to say good bye but was to see oncologist the next day. Took him in and the oncologist discovered a major skin infection had shown up finally. He is now on antibiotics and it is getting better! Acting pretty normal. Eating everything in sight! We know he can't last, but he does not seem ready to go. Happy, wags tail, trouts around the yard.

Another poster that I can remember for sure talked about the roller coaster ride. We are really on it!

  • Poor guy....

I know BenBen has been through chemo and that's probably what prompted the skin reaction/infection; but I'm going to throw this out there for anyone else:

Jack the Cattle Dog, who was basically "bulletproof" - went crazy itching one night. Took him to the Vet the next morning, and she wasn't sure what triggered it, but gave him some meds (prednisone? maybe?) to stop the itching. About a week later, Ed was eating some red licorice, shared a bite with the dogs - and within an hour, Jack was scratching and rolling again. We never confirmed it - but thought maybe he had grown allergic to red food dye? We never let him eat anything red, after that, and he never got itchy again.
  • The main thing is the problem surfaced. But yeah they can, and will keep us on our toes! Making us worry in the process as well!
