Excellent that Calvin is wanting to walk with you! Wow, that is amazing and a VERY good sign. With kids and pets, I've always judged their condition during illness more by what they felt like doing on their own. When they start to show interest in fun and food, you're on your way. One thing, if he starts scratching, that might be a sign to dial back the Tramadol a bit. Ask the vet, but I know that if I take a little extra, I will start itching all over.
