Vomiting and diarrhea are common symptoms for just about every dog ailment known to mankind.
Since a dog's intestinal tract is short, compared to a humans, dogs usually can eat and drink just about anything (garbage, water in rain puddles, etc.)and pass it through before bacteria can grow.
So when a dog does have these problems, there is a reason, but the list of reasons is lengthy, including eating sticks, bones, bacteria, viral infection, etc..
If there is no blood present, that is a good sign. I assume the vet took a fecal specimen and checked it for worms. As long as your dog's condition is stable, or improving, you are on the right track.
