OMG, this cat situation is driving me insane!

So I have the cat with me this winter, for the first time, because he developed diabetes.

First the good news: It turns out he loves exploring new places. Then the bad: He will not use the litter box in the van, and there is no harness that can hold him. He goes out to pee and he does not come back till dark, on the days I want to drive!

I have been stuck in one spot for 3 days and it is driving me crazy. I had a total meltdown when he got off the harness (instantly) this morning.

It's his same litter box as at the S&B, and I have tried it in different locations in the van (private and open). I tried keeping him in for 43 hours but he never peed and that is not safe. He likes the van, and usually hangs out in it all day with the door open... except these last few days.

I am at my wit's end. What should I do tomorrow morning when he meows to go out??? And the next day?

The harness I have is like the Petco one and the kitty holster. Yes, he backs out of it.

I cannot stay at this campsite long enough to train him to use a toilet :). Anyway, he is quite used to a cat box. I think he just feels that, in the van, the outdoors is so conveniently close... and who doesn't prefer to pee in the woods?

  • Have you tried city kitty? I think it was on Shark Tank last year. Its a training system to encourage the cat to use an actual toilet. Haven't tried it myself; or I should say I havent tried it with my cats :)

Time for a 'full body' harness....Petco

Our mini Schnauzer puppy figured out how to back out of a harness like that. Luckily, I was able to grab him right away.
  • The only harness that I found works with our cat is the Kitty Holster. It has wide Velcro closures and snugs up so the cat can't easily squirm out of it.
