RV door latch situation

Anyone good at lost wax molding could crank out some tabs that will last a bit. A good 3D shop that uses sintered Iconel could make some metal tabs that will outlast the handle, the motorhome, and civilization as we know it.

Is there a "don't touch" symbol that works on kids?

As a science teacher, when I had a unit on electricity I put a little home made cardboard magic box on my desk that said "danger do not touch". It had an AA battery connected to a coil via a nail slipping through a washer. The high voltage portion of the coil was connected to tinfoil on two halves of the little box. Picking up the box caused quite a tingle on the fingers.

Take the little red plastic knob to a machine shop and have them make one out of steel, then the kids will not brake it, they will brake the door, but that is another story.

A check at your local appliance dealer might turn-up a small appliance knob with your specification.

My latch with little red plastic handles has a standard quarter inch shaft flattened on one side. I've seen black plastic handles that size at surplus type stores that looked very sturdy. I could make one from a bit of scrap aluminum plate by drilling a shaft hole, grinding to an appropriate shape, drilling and tapping a set screw hole from the side.

I don't know if this will yield good results or turn out to be a waste of time, but take the remaining good red plastic latch to your local lock smith. He might have metal ones meant for other applications.

I don't know which latches/locks interchange with others. What I DO know, is that the hardware is much more expensive for coaches than for trailers. Coach doors have to secure to motor vehicle standards, hence the more expensive parts. Nobody's supposed to be in a moving trailer, so they get by with cheaper locks. They come open on the road, too...

I guess that would be the obvious answer. However, the replacement lock assembly for my door is $90 and comes with more little red plastic knobs!
