and I can pick up little Ben (7 months old) from the Vet after having what we affectionately call a "Lower Lobotomy". He was SOOO scared when I took him to the Vet - he knew something was up...LOL! He's up to a whopping 13 lbs now, which is why I stalled taking him for neutering in the first place (that's not very big for a mini-Aussie/mini-poodle) - but Jack the Cattle Dog has been "threatened" by the presence of an intact male and I'm concerned for Ben's safety, since Jack can't really SEE what he's trying to bite....Poor Jimmy looked at me with horrified eyes when I came through the door without Ben (the last time I left with a dog and came home without, was when Ike was euthanized in April) - but Jimmy understands a LOT of English and I told him Ben was OK and we'll "go get him later". He's sleeping at my feet, so I guess he understood enough of that?Anyway - I'm just killing time. Waitin' on my dawg. And I know almost every one of you has walked in these same, restless moccasins :-)

And he's home - or at least back at work with me. Poor little guy had a lot done to him - he's "clipped (nails), snipped, and chipped". Sleeping on his dog bed under my desk :-)

I wonder if Jack's attitude will change. Maybe it's the "young whippersnapper" that annoys him? We have kind of the opposite deal here. When we leave out the door with one dog or the cat, the other always wants to go, too. I say, "She's going to the doctor!" and the wannabe quickly slinks off and says, "oh, okay, never mind."

He hardly paid any attention to his incision - he's been the easiest surgical patient!! The Rimadyl was worth its weight in gold!

Just know for sure that you did the right thing....neuter - helps prevent the same cancers that human males get. Neuter....the world doesn't need any more unwanted or homeless pets. Neuter.....helps curtail some unappreciated behaviors. Spay and neuter! Wish I knew the lady with the cats who lives down the street....at least well enough to have "the talk" with her before there is another litter of kitties...or two, come spring. Biscuit and Lily will be going for their surgery in about 2+ months.

The one blessing of Ben's surgery (he's still doing fine and ignores his incision) is that his bare tummy in these single-degree windchills tends to make him quicker about his potty breaks...LOL!

Glad Ben is feeling well after his procedure :)

We had our almost 2 yr old GSD spayed 2 weeks ago and it was torture on us. Trying to keep her from wanting to do her normal routine just about drove us all crazy. We had to give her the meds just to keep her mellow since she was bouncing off the walls with energy.

She did great like Ben though :) She never licked her incision or pulled anything. Now she is back to chasing her ball, running in the yard and jumping on my bed!

Jimmy was the first of my guys to get Rimadyl - and what a HUGE difference it makes in them not licking the incision!! Ben's not wearing a cone-of-shame and he's not licking at all - he seems completely comfortable.

Ike (OK - a neurotic Aussie to start with...LOL!) removed his stitches the day after surgery and licked himself constantly - EEEEKS!!! But that's how it was done "back in the day".

Really!! We do rimadyl for all (unless another pain medication is better choice), but 100% get something. We really have not found that pain is an effective way to prevent too much activity.

Times (and thinking) have changed.

I give pain meds after spay or neuter only if I observe signs of discomfort... you really don't want them feeling "too" normal. A little soreness tells them what you can't, which is not to run around like a maniac. But there's no reason to let them be in pain.

Rimadyl for a neuter? Wow, how times times have changed. When my old dogs were "done" the vet didn't believe in any kind of pain meds as he didn't want them to be too active. That caused me pain on their behalf. Pretty brutal, it seemed to me. Glad it's different now.
