Thanks to everyone for the comforting words. Wife named her after Shirley MacLane who played Weezie in Steel Magnolias. We pronounced it "WeeeZer." We left home this morning on a trip to Branson for our annual Army reunion. We both said goodbye to her and teared up as we pulled out. First trip in 10 years and over 40,000 miles without her. Wife placed her blanket on the center console and I noticed her stroking it out of habit,
I asked about another and she said she doesn't know. Perhaps when the pain subsides some, I am ready. We had an English Setter for 14 years and had to put her down but she was an outside dog with some house privileges. It was 8 years between the two.
We are thankful that her slide in health was quick. She had the normal slow down because of her age but was still able to do her normal activities until a week ago. She lost her hearing a few years ago but was able to see us as we moved about, The last week she refused to eat. After two days we bought some prepared wet meals for her and she devoured them. After a few days refused to eat them anymore, Then her normal treats were turned away as she began to drink huge amount of water but she was not diabetic. We believe she drank the water to satisfy hunger as for the last 24 hours she refused to eat anything. We know she had memory problems but that did not seem to be much of an issue. The last day she would go to her water dish, drink and then raise her head and stare at the wall. Walk to the back door, turn around back to the living area, back to the water, outside and then repeat. I was able to get her to sleep next to me for a couple of hours Sunday night. We then decided that it was time.
