Out the window

I was driving southbound on CA101 north of Santa Barbara Friday Jun 28, and thought I saw fragments from a tire blowout. A truck and 5th wheel were ahead of me, and I was prepared to navigate around the tire material.

My girlfriend said, "no, it was a dog falling out of the tow vehicle". Immediately the tow vehicle pulled to the right and slowed substantially, and I drove around it. As I passed, I saw the dog cartwheeling and it eventually got right side up and ran after the rig.

Unfortunately, my dash cam was off.

Since the dog appeared to be running normally, I guess it could have been OK, or in shock.

The dog could have been. The only clue that it fell from the cab was how quickly the rig pulled over. Seems the driver would have known immediately about the dog going out the window - faster perhaps than if it went out the bed of the truck.
  • It is thankfully, unlawful to have any animal riding in the open bed of a truck on CA highways without a tether than is short enough to prevent the animal's body from exiting the bed and hanging itself.

It's a shame the dog was probably injured and with few if any CHP patrolling our highways the jerk gets away with animal neglect and endangerment. 250 hours of animal emergency room work and clean up maybe more, would be a fair punishment.
  • Makes me cringe (for several reasons, including what occurred here) every time I see a dog head sticking out a car window.

Me too, especially if they are sitting on the driver's lap.
  • Makes me wonder if the dog was riding in the bed of the truck pulling the 5er? I've read about a lot of heavy stuff getting sucked out of truck beds - it seems there are weird vortices happening back there with a 5th wheel? I even think I read once about a guy having his genny get blown out - a dog would be a cinch compared to that. Glad it was able to get back up and run.

At least you missed the dog from the first incident. :)

No kidding. It was upsetting enough as it was.

We had a little debate about turning back to assist, but didn't.

  • Interestingly, about 20 miles later, some lawn chairs came untied from the rear ladder of another rig. I ran over one folded chair. I wound up watching my tire pressure monitor for a bit, hoping I did not blow a tire.
