PEPCID AC

My Vet recommended giving my Shih Tzu a 5mg Pepcid AC at bedtime to stop the occasional bile vomiting in the mornings. The problem is I can't find it in 5mg dosage. I could cut a 10mg in half, would this be ok? Also, is the Pepcid chewable or do I need to have him take it without chewing it?

  • I had to laugh when my vet told me my shih tzu had acid reflux! Split a 10 mg pill in two and stick it in some cheese like I do.
  • Thanks folks, I'll go with the 10mg and I have a splitter. He'll get his first one tonight before bed. I'll check the liquid out to see how I can control the amount of dosage. It would be easier.
  • We used Pepcid with one of our dogs. Your pharmacy will have a pill splitter that makes it easier.
  • There are liquid versions of pepcid that are a little easier to get smaller doses, but it's OK to split the tablets.

  • I cut a 10 mg in half for our Chihuahua. She has allergy problems.
It's not a problem, I use the regular tablets, not the chewable type.
I don't think it makes a difference which type you use.

She swallows them without a problem. Maybe you could wrap it in cheese or his/her favorite treat?
