pet carrier

After hearing about the tornado that hit the rv park, I asked myself what would I do in that situation.

I think I would take my dogs & go to the shower house, or whatever building was available.

I'd like to put our 2 8lb chihuahuas in their own pet carriers.

Do any of you use a pet carrier? If so, what kind?
I can't think of any other time I'd use it, but I'd sure like to have them in an emergency.

So, if anyone who uses a pet carrier can help me out with some insight, it would be much appreciated.

  • I think I'd want a carrier with a shoulder strap for easier carrying.

I hope I never have to use it.
  • We always check the local area if there is a possibility for that kind of severe weather. Many campgrounds will not allow you to bring pets in the shelter with you. The local areas we've visited usually have one or two places you can go to with your pet(s). We've had to do this several times especially in Florida, Missouri and Oklahoma and the campgrounds were of no help. Two exceptions were in Texas and Mississippi (the one in MS is now closed).
  • We use a sturdy plastic carrier when traveling and in the truck, so our dog is very comfortable going into it. Any situation in which she might be scared, we would use it. Otherwise we use a soft crate for sleeping, etc. but we leave it unzipped. We have used these items since she was 12 weeks, so now at 6 yrs. she is very comfortable in any crate we need to use.
  • And...if you have never used one, make sure you get your guys accustom to being in one long before this kind of emergency.
  • For a bad weather situation I'd want a hard sided crate (not a soft-sided, luggage like crate or a wire folding crate). For dogs that size you should be able to find a good one at any pet store. You could get a crate for each of them or if they get along well you'd also have the option of putting both of them in one crate. I'd consider whether it would be easier for you to carry two smaller crates or one slightly larger crate with both of them in it.
