Pet pens

We travel with our dogs (under 20 pounds). Looked at a campground website we were considering and they do not allow the open top pens but allow the full enclosure crates. First thought for not allowing the open pens is that the campground is in bear country. Then it came to me that even the full crates are no real barrier to a bear. Anyone have a theory or hear of a reason why? Will call the campground tomorrow if someone is still there as they close from late Oct. to May.

Because the park does not want pens. We do not allow pens (or dogs being tethered unattended) for numerous reasons. First, pens often do not secure the dogs, they can either jump the pen or dig under the pen. Second, people let their dogs out in the pens and do not clean up after them, either by choice or they just plain missed the fact their dog pooped. Third, People often leave their dogs in the pens unsupervised. Fourth, after a few days, penned dogs often trample the grass down into paths along the perimeter of the fence. Fifth, people often secure the pens by driving spikes into the ground and consequently into the irrigation system. Sixth, pens impede normal maintenance and sometimes are just plain unsightly. It is much easier to say "no pens" than it is to deal individually with each issue that arrives.
As for no pens but crates are OK, I have never seen people that use crates as they would pens, leaving their pets in them for long periods of time unsupervised . And if people put crates outside and leave them, we ask them to move them inside their rig. Have we lost customers because of our dog rules, absolutely. Falls under the "can't please everyone all the time" clause of business.

Thank you. Most logical answer. Only reason we use the pens is the dogs frequently have to make a deposit outside and many times it is in the middle of the night and when its cold outside I can stand inside until they'er finished.
  • I daresay the primary reason has to do with people who leave their dogs unsupervised in the pens. We keep our dogs with us at all times. Others may not be as responsible.

We have our dogs on leash at all times except inside the mh. We've never had a problem but then we always monitor our dogs when out and about.

My theory? People rarely leave their dogs in crates outside. However, on numerous occasions, I have seen people leave their dogs in their 'pens' outside alone while they sit inside and watch tv. The dogs often bark, get loose, and misbehave while the owners continue to watch tv. Yes, most dog owners with pens are good owners who take care of their dogs. But, some are not and they make it harder for all other owners. Pens are an enclosure but they are not a leash under human control. The same campgrounds probably don't allow one to tie their dog to a tree and walk away either. Which I have seen more than once.
  • Some dogs are climbers and can get out of pens you would not think they could. And also people put larger dogs in pens too short for the dog's size with the potential of them jumping out if another dog came in the area. Easier to just enforce a no open top pen rule.
  • Keeps your dogs in, other dogs out. Do they allow you to leash them?
  • Keeps the dogs secure and also keeps people from their need to stick their hands over your pens!

Which is most likely the primary reason why uncovered enclosures are not allowed.

Don't have an answer for you regarding the bears. But perhaps to make sure the dogs don't jump out?

Are you talking about exercise pens with no tops?
They make a custom fit top for ex-pens. You have to set the pen up in a square to fit. It is hinged so you can open one side up to access the dogs.

I use them all the time with my ex pens at CG's. Keeps the dogs secure and also keeps people from their need to stick their hands over your pens! :C
