Pets death while traveling?

Since we have no home, and have lost the three dogs that started this journey with us, they are cremated and continue to ride along with us.

If I was on the road - I'd have the beloved pet cremated, then have the ashes shipped to one of my kids' homes for safekeeping until we got back.

Jack's cremation (50 lb dog) cost us $139, and he was back home in about a week. Granted, Michigan prices tend to be on the lower side - but it's way worth it for the peace-of-mind knowing his final resting place will be where we want - NOT where our travels dictate.

On the other hand, hoping you have a lovely trip and don't need this service :-)

Our Percy (she is a "Toller",eg Novia Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever) had her first episode of CVS in January of 2013. She recovered very nicely. She had her second episode 4 weeks ago and has not done as well. On Monday, she had another attack of something similar and is just beginning to come out of it. We are in Florida now for our grandson's graduation and I think we need to get her out of the heat and humidity. Thanks again for all the positive thoughts. lizzie

Think good thoughts. Our lab went thru this Canine Vestibular Syndrome and she got over it. We thought she was done for. Sea sick pills for about a week and she was started to get better and better then alright. There are many videos showing dogs with it. Either what you call it or "old age vestibular". Ours lived another 4 years after that to 18!!!. I think she did lose some hearing after that, don't know if age or vestibular that caused hearing loss.

If we lost ours on the road I would call local vet wherever we were and have her remains cremated and sent to our address at home. If we were full timing and without a home I would carry her remains with us until we found a perfect spot where we knew that she where she would want to be.

Great advice. Bring the ashes home with you or honor the place where she died by spreading her ashes there. We did the latter when one of beloved friends died in SD and we were still living in OR. We feel good in knowing her ashes are where she died. But either way, she will be with you until the end.

We had our little buddy pass on also at 14 1/2 yrs old. We checked with the rv park we were at and got some recommendations of vets and worked with them to get him cremated. His ashes are with us on our mantel and waiting for his long time partner to join him. Together they will still travel with us.

Thank you so much for your responses. This is just what I needed to know. We will be taking her with us. She is not so debilitated that we cannot care for her as we travel. She is not incontinent and can still go for short walks. She mostly sleeps when at home or in the truck, so that part doesn't matter. She does have to be lifted in and out of the truck and the TT but only weighs 25lbs.lizzie

Our lab,Sooner,died while we were traveling. We contacted the nearest Vet who helped us make arrangements for his cremation. Due to a commitment-we couldn' remain in the area. The Vet and staff were so kind,and offered to send his ashes to our home as soon as we returned. That happened 7 years ago and I still can hardly think about that sad day without crying.

This is what I would do as well.

When I went to Australia, I looked at this question. For that trip I had my dogs in a kennel.

The Kennel keeper knew of a person who would freeze the remains.

I made sure the Kennel keeper, the remains keeper, and my vet knew of my wishes.

Oh, and I still have said dog.

I like the idea of cremation if your very senior dog reaches the end of active life while you're away. Did you get any idea of the $ for that?
