Seems like people don't just take 1 dog camping anymore. I's two, three or more. The average person with a dog on a leash has a hard time controlling 1 dog let alone multiple dogs.
I have two dogs. I would have had one, but when Dog passed away, Moose-dog became very nervous and distraught at being an only dog. After a month with him continuing to get worse, I got Bat-dog. Moose-dog immediately went back to his old self.
What I do is use a double leash. That way I am only having to hold on to one leash and the dogs act as a single entity at the end. It is much easier than trying to control two dogs on two separate leashes. When in the campsite, I will attach the dogs to either end of the one leash and run the leash under my chair leg. The double leash lets them have some separation but they help me by holding the other back. It is also a great training tool - Bat-dog didn't do "come" very well; with the double leash, I'd call them both in and Moose-dog always came dragging Bat-dog along. Now, Bat-dog comes when called and drags Moose-dog back (he's developed old man dog syndrome). Works well.
If I had three dogs, I wouldn't camp. As a solo camper, it's just too hard to control three dogs at once. Honestly having rescued and had 5 dogs at one time, I will never have more than 2 again. Regardless of size, temperament, etc.
